“I was ten and went with my mom and my aunt to the Palácio movie house, that’s now the gorgeous Riachuelo Theater. I became gaga for the movie and, like any obsessive child, I wanted to watch The Sound of Music every week. Obviously, no one at home wanted to take me. That’s when my dad, who was a colonel, decided to teach his cadet — me! — to take care of myself. I would hop on the 119 and, as soon as I saw the Monumento Aos Pracinhas, pull the cord, get off the bus, cross the street and reach the Palácio. [pause] I think, in a way, I’m still there, in that chair, under the protection of the dark theater, lulled by Julie Andrews’s voice…"
About the author
Flávio Marinho is a writer, playwright, translator, and director with over ninety shows in his resumé — including plays, musicals and concerts. He’s the author of plays such as Não me entrego, não! — published by Cobogó in 2025, winning him Best Actor at the 2024 FITA theater awards —, Judy: O arco-íris é aqui — which won him prizes such as the APTR for Best Author and the É Sobre Musicais for Best Book and Best Show —, Cauby! Cauby! Uma lembrança!, and many others. He has published countless books, including Quem tem medo de besteirol (2004), Jabuti-nominated Oscarito: O riso e o siso (2007), Teatro é o melhor programa (2016), and Flávio Marinho em letra de imprensa (2024).
He has directed concerts by artists such as Olívia and Francis Hime, Zé Renato, Tânia Alves, Boca Livre, Selma Reis, Cauby Peixoto and Ângela Maria. He wrote and collaborated with TV shows such as Escolinha do Professor Raimundo and Pé na cova. For 14 years, he worked as a journalist and theater critic in vehicles such as O Globo, Última Hora and Tribuna da Imprensa, as a film theater for Jornal do Brasil, and as a special reporter for Vogue, Elle and Ele&Ela.
About the collection
The Dramaturgia collection has, since 2012, published writing by Brazilian and international playwrights. The books help in building a memory of current theater, making a new record in the contemporary theater scene. In 2015, Cobogó also launched Dramaturgia Espanhola, the Spanish collection, in 2019, Dramaturgia Francesa, the French collection, and, in 2022, Dramaturgia Holandesa, the Dutch collection. Over 70 important theater authors have been published, with over 100 titles, including various award-winning plays.
