The Dragged Woman, a play by playwright and screenwriter Diones Camargo, was written based on a true tragedy that occurred in Rio de Janeiro in 2014. Cláudia Silva Ferreira — a poor, Black, 38-year old woman, who worked in a hospital's cleaning staff, a mother of four biological children, and four adopted ones — was brutally shot by the Military Police when leaving home in Rio de Janeiro's Morro da Congonha, to buy bread for her family. After the shooting, her body was thrown into a police van, part of it left hanging outside the vehicle. The woman was subsequently dragged through the streets, still alive, under the horrified eyes of passersby and nearby drivers.
Intertwining the true case and a fictional narrative, this award-winning manifesto-play rescues Cláudia’s tragic figure and places her centerstage, to reclaim what was erased, little by little, in the case's journalistic coverage: her name, replaced by the cruel monicker of “dragged woman”.
The play won more than ten awards — including four for Best Play — and, since premiering, in 2018, has been featured in important festivals in Brazil and abroad, and toured over 28 Brazilian towns.
“The Dragged Woman puts centerstage what isn't seen and isn't heard, but is still present. It’s playwriting with powerful succinctness and instituted poetic capacity. It's worth reading and rereading. So, whoever has this book in hand, have a nice read, or, better yet, a nice listen. May good winds guide us.” — Dione Carlos, playwright, screenwriter and actress.
