Ana Lívia and Other Women

Ana Lívia and Other Women collects the first plays by Caetano W. Galindo, a writer, professor and translator who has won the biggest literary awards in Brazil. Divided in three parts, the book features the texts of Ana Lívia and Leonora, as well as a dossier regarding the process of writing and rehearsing Ana Lívia, in partnership with the Cia. BR116 – Teatrofilme theater company.

In Ana Lívia, two actress-characters, Ana and Lívia, need to tell each other important things. However, they resist, interrupt and evade each other, to avoid saying hard things. Lívia wants to talk about a new play, while Ana feels like she has reached her third act. Two actresses who are now lacking a playwright; two roles for a single character. Ana was, Lívia is, Ana Lívia… will be?

Leonora, a short play built after reading Down Below, by writer and painter Leonora Carrington (1917-2011), is a stage poem of death and rebirth, overcoming and confrontation, art, dream, and creation. The performance looks for a way to deal with what can’t be said, through the music of words.

In the dossier about Ana Lívia, the author comments references and parts of the play that were removed or modified in the final text, illuminating the debates and contributions of the collective work of theater.

Excerpt
“See? You’re whatever. You only need a few strands to have a place to start from. Vapor. Words, words, words. You're the whole world while there’s a world to be. Don't take this from us. We die on Sunday and are reborn every Friday, always at the same time, since forever. Nothing new. Don’t let this world kill you. Don’t take this from us. Deep down, that’s why we’re here. We’re unfoldable. Remember that day by the lake?”
