Spirit of Everything – Rosângela Rennó

Spirit of Everything unfolds from Rosângela Rennó’s solo exhibition at Oi Futuro in Flamengo, that took place between November 2016 and January 2017. Divided into six series, the book presents the works developed by the artist, in which she mixes visual and discursive sophistication with a mystical and playful dimension. The publication includes, in addition to the images of the works, a text by Evangelina Seiler, curator of the show that originated the book, quotes from artists and intellectuals, such as Caetano Veloso and Marcel Proust, and texts by the artist herself. Rosângela Rennó is known for deconstructing image and memory, time and space, always inserting critical and sensorial layers.

About the artist
Rosângela Rennó was born in Belo Horizonte, in 1962, and lives in Rio de Janeiro. She graduated in Fine Arts from the Guignard School and in Architecture from UFMG. She also holds a doctoral degree in Arts from the School of Communication and Arts at USP. Her work is marked by the appropriation of discarded images, found in flea markets and fairs, and by the investigation of the relations between memory and forgetfulness. In her photographs, objects, videos, or installations, she works with family albums and images obtained in public or private archives. She also works on the creation of authorial books. In 1994, she participated in the 22nd International Biennial of SP and, in 2003, in the Venice Biennale. In 2013, she won the Paris Photo award for best photobook. She has held several solo exhibitions, among which are: Fundação Gulbenkian, in Lisbon; Fotomuseum, in Winterthur, in 2012; and the Photographer’s Gallery, in London, 2016. Her works are in some of the world’s leading museums of modern art, such as the Reina Sofia, in Madrid; the Tate Modern, in London; the Arts Institute of Chicago; the Guggenheim, in New York; and the Stedelijk, in Amsterdam.
