I won't play Medea

The play is about to begin. In the wings, an actress refuses to go onstage: she doesn't want to play Medea, the character immortalized by Greek poet Euripides. Feeling over everything and out of place, she reflects about living in theater and her conflicting relationship with her job, undoing the pact with the stage and breaking the expectations of everyone around her.

With poetic, hypnotic, and finely built writing, Eu não vou fazer Medeia, written by Magne van den Berg, who has won the Taalunie Toneelschrijfprijs, an important Dutch drama award, is a work about the courage of questioning everything we once believed. Translated by Jonathan Andrade, it’s one of the five titles published by the Dramaturgia Holandesa collections, which presents foundational Dutch contemporary theater texts translated by important names of Brazilian theater.
