Fernanda Abreu — 30 Years after Da Lata

On July 5th, 1995, Fernanda Abreu was launching her record Da Lata. With a new type of sound in the neighborhood — a “swing-swaying-funk”, a demonstration of the connection between the suburbs, the hood and the South Side of Rio de Janeiro —, the album constructed the image of a “carioca girlie, with good blood and swing inside” and exalted the city in a dancing pop rhythm. A hit with audiences and critics alike, Da Lata was chosen by Billboard as the best Latin-American album of the year, and cemented Fernanda Abreu as the artist-symbol of the carioca lifestyle of the 90s. Thirty years later, this book celebrates the album, exploring the creative, visual and cultural universes that were involved in its production.

With a silver cover, a design by Luiz Stein, * Fernanda Abreu — 30 Years after Da Lata * opens with an essay by Fernanda herself, recognizing the relevance of the album as a milestone in her career. Bringing together texts from 1995, from the original launch — like the poem “A Lata” [The Tin], by Chacal, set to music on the album, and writings from Fausto Fawcett, from the British producer, Will Mowat, from Marcelo Tas, and from Hermano Vianna — and new contributions, written specially for the 2025 book, by Letrux, Silvio Essinger, Rogério S., Bruno Boulay and Claudia Assef, the edition brings different perspectives on the impact that the album had on music, culture and the overall behavior of its generation. Even more, the book contains a photoshoot of Walter Carvalho, records of the 1995-1996 tour by Evaldo Luna, archive images from Universal Music by Otavio D. Oliveira and general memorabilia, like photos of the CD and K7 editions, tickets, flyers, folders, posters, individual badges, and iconic costumes from the period.

More than an homage, this book is an invitation to revisit Da Lata in all its energy, irreverence, and historical relevance.

About Fernanda Abreu
Fernanda Abreu, singer, composer and ballerina, started her career in the 80s, as a backing vocal of Blitz, and eventually starred as soloist in 1990, with SLA Radical Dance Disco Club, mixing disco, funk, hip hop and samba, establishing herself as the “mother of the Brazilian dancing pop”. A pioneer in embracing the Carioca Funk performed in the outskirts of town, she released hits that became true hymns like Rio 40 Graus and achieved international success with Da Lata (1995). Over a career of more than 40 years, she released albums like Raio X, Entidade Urbana and Amor Geral, collaborated with huge artists and goes on performing at festivals and tours. Known for her cultural contribution, Fernanda holds on to a strong connection to Rio de Janeiro, active in social projects, and still is the eternal “carioca girlie, with good blood and swing inside”.
