Hacking the Power: Guerrilla Tactics for Global South Artists

Hackeando o poder: Táticas de guerrilha para artistas do Sul global [Hacking the Power: Guerrilla Tactics for Global South Artists] is a manual of guerrilla tactics for women artists who wish to enter the arts system. From practical and technical to conceptual and subjective, its essays discuss essential issues of our times — such as the fight against racism, inequality, gender violence and queerphobia — through a decolonial lens, and present ideas and means for young artists from peripheral regions, so they can insert themselves in the arts market and its institutional spaces.

Based on the Rede NAMI ten-year-plus experience as an organization that connects art and social transformation, and elaborated collectively, in words and images, by female artists and art professionals, such as Aline Motta, Amanda Carneiro, Keyna Eleison, Panmela Castro, Priscila Roxo and Rosana Paulino, the book intends to introduce the paths of the art world to a new generation that’s aware of its position in the world. How can young female artists network, show their work and live off of their art?

Through sharing experiences, knowledge, stories and images, the volume intends to encourage and expand mutual collaboration, so that, beyond individual achievements, structures are built for everyone and all future generations. After all, an effective and affective hacking of art institutions and their agents can only be established collectively.

In the words of Rosana Paulino, “therefore, it’s not a how-to manual to make money off of art, but essays showing the importance of professionalization in this environment that's so refractory to peripheral populations, and, notedly, to women, particularly Black women.”

About the organization
Rede NAMI is a non-profit organization that uses art as a vehicle for social transformation. Their projects promote the rights of women, Black people, Indigenous people, LGBTQIAP+ people, and disabled people. The organization was born in 2010 due to its founder’s, Panmela Castro’s, wish to contribute towards the end of violence against women, and to encourage women to take center stage in the art world. NAMI works on the ground, attempting to nurture the leadership power of socially marginalized groups in various areas, directly aligned to three of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals to build a more equal and sustainable world.
