Iole de Freitas – Body/Space presents a panorama of the artist’s work and language, throughout 40 years, in image, writing and other materials that precede or follow her creative process. They are studies, schemes, sketches, notes and drafts. In order to build this book, the artist dove deep into her personal archive, currently housed at IAC (Contemporary Art Institute) in São Paulo. Among the material, over ten thousand pieces produced from 1972 to 2018, featuring her primordial interest in the body and in reinventing space.
About the artist
Iole de Freitas was born in 1945 in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. At the age of six, she moved to Rio de Janeiro, where she began learning contemporary dance. She studied Design at ESDI/UERJ. In 1970, she moves to Milan, Italy, where she spends eight years, two of them (1970-1971) working at Olivetti’s Corporate Image Studio, under the guidance of architect Hans Von Klier. She begins developing and showing her visual arts work in 1973. Amongst her individual exhibitions, some highlights: 9th Paris Biennale (1975); 15th São Paulo Biennale (1981); traveling exhibition Cartographies (1993), in New York, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Bogota, Caracas and Madrid; O Corpo da Escultura: A Obra de Iole de Freitas, curated by Paulo Venancio Filho, at the Museu de Arte Moderna in São Paulo and Paço Imperial in Rio de Janeiro (1997); and the 5th Mercosul Biennale (2005) in Porto Alegre. In 2007, Iole was invited to develop a new project for Kassel’s Documenta 12, in Germany. In 2017, she was part of Modos de ver o Brasil: Itaú Cultural 30 anos, in São Paulo.
