“Colonialism is a wound that has never been properly treated, an infected wound, that always hurts, and sometimes bleeds”
About the artist
Grada Kilomba is an interdisciplinary artist, writer and theorist, with roots in Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe, born in Lisbon, where she studied psychology and psychoanalysis. In the wake of Frantz Fanon and bell hooks, the author reflects about memory, race, gender, postcolonialism, and her work embraces performance, acting, physical installations and video. Kilomba intentionally creates a hybrid space between the academic and artistic languages, giving voice, body and image to her own texts. Her works were presented at the 32nd São Paulo Bienal, the 10th Berlin Bienal, the Documenta 14, the Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian and the São Paulo Pinacoteca, among other spaces. She lives in Berlin, where she got a PhD in philosophy at the Freie Universität and was a professor at the Gender Department at the Humboldt Universität.
