Excerpts
“OTHON:
Artist, your name is born in the list of those bound to bleed for passion and pain. It’s a mark, it’s a curse, there’s no cure. You’ll fulfill your mission until you vanish with your cross, your root pain. Creation is more important than happiness.”
“OTHON:
[imitating Glauber Rocha] “Othon, come on, I need to you to make my film.” I explained to him that I couldn’t do it, that I was rehearsing the play. “I’ll buy you out!” What? We went to the theater. And can you believe that he convinced production to lend me to his movie for two weeks, for 100,000 cruzeiros? [to the Memory] Memory, how much is that worth nowadays?
MEMORY:
36 reais and 45 cents.
OTHON
And there I went to the ends of the earth to do Black God, White Devil for $36.45.”
