In LadoB LadoA (SideB SideA), Frederico Coelho dissects the historical and social context in which the band O Rappa wrote the songs featured in the namesake record, portraying the city of Rio de Janeiro in the late 1990s. The author covers everything from the beginning of the recording process to the developments of the album’s release. The polarization between the inside and outside of favelas, funk music, violence, drug dealing, the streets, the outsiders and a number of other issues raised in the record are shown to be interrelated – all of which are explored by the author as he pores over its songs and analyzes each of the album’s tracks.
About the band
O Rappa was formed in 1993 in Rio de Janeiro, by Nelson Meirelles, Marcelo Lobato, Alexandre Menezes, Marcelo Yuka and Marcelo Falcão. The band incorporated musical elements from rock, hip-hop, samba, dub, funk and rap. The songs of LadoB LadoA, with its poignant lyrics about central issues of the Brazilian reality, marked a whole generation and became classics.
