Pedro Vinicio: I'm fine, except for everything

“Why do tomorrow what you can just not do?” “I wake up early to be late on time.” “If I throw caution to the winds, I’ll just have to run after it.” “If life gets you down, make the most of it: sleep.” “I’ve got so much to do that I don't even know what to give up first.” “I suffer from pre-nothing anxiety: nothing’s gonna happen, but I’m already anxious.” “What are you doing tonight? If everything goes according to plan, not a thing.”

These quotes, both fun and painfully real, are coined by Pedro Vinicio, born in 2005 in the town of Garanhuns, and accompanied by expressive drawings, both childish and desperate, which went viral in 2020. In what was a dark time for the entire world, and for Brazil as well, the young man was able to translate the great unease of contemporary life — the combination of hyper connectivity, anxiety and exhaustion that's been plaguing everyone, more and more inexorably, throughout this 21st Century.

Injecting a welcome dose of simple humor in a heavy reality, Pedro Vinicio shows us that nothing brings us closer than laughing at our pain and at the incessant demands of daily life. His work, passing now from phone screens to book pages, is proof that — paraphrasing Caetano Veloso, one of his references — we have to respect our tears, and even more so, our laughs.

About the author
Artist Pedro Vinicio was born in 2005, in Garanhuns, Pernambuco, where he lives to this day. He fell in love with art when, in his first years of school, a teacher invited him to paint a wall. Soon after, he experimented with oil on canvas, and, during the social isolation at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, he started using illustration apps on his phone and computer. In 2020, aged 15, he started sharing online pictures and sentences featuring a disconcerting humor, reflecting the moment of the country’s pandemic and political crisis. His posts were so relatable that, by 2023, his Instagram profile, @pedrovinicio80, already had over 500 thousand followers.
