Every Sunday, with Cacá Diegues’ articles

In the book Todo domingo, com os artigos de Cacá Diegues, Diegues’ newspaper articles, published at the newspaper O Globo, between 2010 and 2017, can be savored. Although the author is one of the biggest filmmakers of the country, this is not a book about cinema. “This is a book about Brazil”, the movie critic Rodrigo Fonseca summarizes, editor of the edition. Diegues’ reflections can come from the news, books or movies, or even from a lost penalty kick, the elections, or any other place that invites him to analyze and write about the identity of the Brazilian people. They are everyday matters, of politics and the economy, of culture and behavior, besides the oddities of the everyday, the OCD attitudes and the beauties that make the country what it is. In his articles, he cleanses his texts from any academic timbre and exercises a critique through ironic reason, in a type of chit chat with the Sunday morning reader.

“The texts that make up this book extend not only the desire to think about Brazil, but also reflect the concern to imagine and reinvent it. (…) This book is, above all, a project of resistance against the impoverishment of debate, of language, of the craft of writing. And it generates the same enchantment that permeates the cinematographic work of Carlos Diegues.” – Walter Salles

About the author

One of Brazil’s most respected actors, the filmmaker, producer and writer Cacá Diegues translated the social, political, and cultural identity of Brazilian people into films. Coming from Alagoas but living at Rio de Janeiro from childhood, one of the founders of Cinema Novo [New Cinema], Diegues was nominated three times to The Palme d’or at Cannes Festival, where Bye Bye Brasil (1980), Quilombo (1984) and Um trem para as estrelas (1987) competed. He was involved in making 37 movies, including short, medium, and feature-length films. With movies commercially screened on every continent, he has participated in the official selections of the most important international film festivals, like the Cannes (where he was also a member of the Jury, in 1981 and 2010), Venice, Berlin, Toronto, Locarno, Montreal, San Sebastián and New York. Amongst his international award-winning movies are Orfeu, chosen as the best film at the Cartagena Film Festival, in 2000, and O maior amor do mundo, winner of the Gran Prix des Amériques, in Montreal, in 2006. In Brazil, one of the biggest box office hits, Xica da Silva (1976), which heralded the return of democratic joy, won the Candango trophy for best film and best director at the Brasília Film Festival. Tieta do Agreste (1996) and Deus é Brasileiro (2000), adapted from great works of national literature, also rank among his most popular movies. In 1998 he received, from the French government, the title of “Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” and was awarded the medal “Ordem de Mérito Cultural” [Order of Cultural Merit] by the Brazilian government in 2001. Cacá Diegues has nine other published books and has regularly written articles for the newspaper O Globo since 2010.
