The book 5 x Favela, Now by Ourselves presents a behind-the-scenes look, through photographs and texts, on the motion picture inspired by the feature Cinco Vezes Favela, a milestone in the Brazilian cinema of the 1960’s. The film 5 x Favela, Now by Ourselves, produced by Carlos Diegues and Renata Magalhães, was directed by seven filmmakers born and leaving in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Organized as an inventory of ideas and discussions, derived from rewritten scripts, storyboards, scene planning drafts, e-mail exchanges and filming journals, the book tells the experience of these young directors from the peripheries of Rio de Janeiro, from the professional training workshops to the casting, the rehearsals and finally the shooting and the trip to the Cannes Film Festival.
