In 1993, Chico Science & Nação Zumbi went into a professional studio for the first time to record their album Da lama ao caos (From Mud to Chaos). The Mangue scene, an early 1990s collective musical and aesthetic insurrection, extrapolated their Recife nights for the first São Paulo concert and an immersion in the legendary Nas Nuvens studio, in Rio de Janeiro. Their recipe of rock, hip hop, funk and Pernambuco rhythms such as maracatu, ciranda and coco became known as Manguebeat and achieved international projection. The stories of this “fun taken seriously”, as Chico Science would say, from the first Recife parties at Adília’s Place to the tragic accident suffered by the band’s frontman, are told in this book by Lorena Calábria. Based on many conversations with the band’s musicians and partners, family members and people who were otherwise part of the album’s trajectory, the journalist rescues the atmosphere at the time to showcase what Manguebeat – and the release of Da lama ao caos – meant for Brazilian music.
About the band
Chico Science & Nazão Zumbi was an iconic band for the Manguebeat movement and became a reference for the country’s music scene, from the 1990s until today. The formation responsible for the album Da lama ao caos was composed of Chico Science (vocals), Lúcio Maia (guitar), Dengue (bass), Toca Ogan (drums), Jorge du Peixe, Gilmar Bolla 8 and Gira (alfaia) and Canhoto (snare drum). The singer, composer and frontman, Chico Science, was a kind of “rhythm scientist”. His search for the perfect beat brought together in an extremely original manner the regional and the universal, creating a new sound for Brazilian music. Chico Science was part of the band’s first two albums – Da lama ao caos, 1994, and Afrociberdelia (Afrocyberdelia), 1996 – and two international tours, before a fatal tragic accident in 1997.
