The Tropicalismo was the movement responsible for the most anthropophagic works in the history of Brazilian art, while also critically reflecting on the formation of Brazil. It reached its apex with album-manifesto Tropicália ou Panis et circencis, created by a collective of extraordinary artists and musicians as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Tom Zé, Gal Costa, Os Mutantes, Nara Leão, Rogerio Duprat, Torquato Neto and Capinam. Released in 1968, the record was the synthesis of this avant-garde cultural and political movement. From melodies to clothing, from arrangements to the album cover, from instruments to converts, everything was an aesthetic labor and a cultural and political stance. In the words of author Pedro Duarte: “Listening to the collective album Tropicália ou Panis et circencis nowadays brings to the musical experience a common paradox with 20th century avant-garde art: on one hand, its innovative force is still alive, and even surprising for those who don’t know the group who created it; on the other, the songs reach us now as definitive classics of Brazilian culture.”
