At the time when Brazilian television celebrates its 70th anniversary, the world goes into confinement to protect from COVID-19, declared a pandemic by the WHO in March 2020. When authorities ask everyone to stay at home, television, film, music and theater take on an important role in people’s new routines. Content is reformulated and adapted, hastening a trend that gave its warning signs since the advent of the internet. In Conversation with Bial at Home: 70 Years of Brazilian Tv in the Times of the Internet and Social Isolation, we present a selection of interviews conducted by journalist Pedro Bial for his show Conversa com Bial, featuring artists, filmmakers, journalists, musicians and economists, to reflect on the history and role of television, internet, art and Brazil. In its new format during socially confined quarantine, the stage becomes their homes. And, in this book, the audience is the reader.
“An interview has predeterminate interests, and good conversation is always disinterested, art for art’s sake. It’s not easy to have a natural conversation under the spotlights, on a stage, in front of an audience, announced by a band’s chords. It’s not impossible, it happens, but it’s a lucky exception.” – Pedro Bial
In this book, Pedro Bial is in conversation with Glória Maria, Laura Carvalho, Armínio Fraga, Paulo Gustavo, Xuxa Meneghel, Gilberto Gil, Daniel Filho, Ary Fontoura, Lima Duarte, Betty Faria, Glória Pires, Alceu Valença, Ricardo Darín, Caetano Veloso, David Wilson, Eliane Dias, Silvio Almeida, Luiza Brunet, Ruy Castro, Bruno Mazzeo, Antonio Prata, Luiza Trajano, William Bonner, Paulinho da Viola and Zico.
