About the artist
One of the most original figures in Brazilian popular music – or in MPB, as this musical genre is most commonly known –, Tom Zé took part in the Tropicália movement and watched critics rediscover his record Estudando o samba after a period of rejection. Since then, his unique journey and his work’s aesthetics and political relevance have been continuously discussed and admired. Nowadays, having released over twenty albums, this musician from Bahia continues to stand for radicalism and experimentation in music.

About the author
Bernardo Oliveira is a Philosophy Professor, musician, and a film and music critic. He holds a doctorate in Philosophy from PUC-Rio, with a doctoral internship at Brown University. Currently, he writes for the collaborative blog Matéria and co-produces the music event Quintavant and the music label QTV, besides participating in the production of the Novas Frequências festival of experimental music.
