One of Clara Nunes’s greatest sucess, Guerreira (Warrior) was the samba record that consolidate the artist’s career. The songs present the girl from Minas Gerais raised in samba, daughter of Angola, Ketu and Nagô, a warrior woman. The 11th record among the singer’s 15 solo albums was produced by Paulo César Pinheiro and includes songs written by Portela Samba School composers, such as Aniceto da Portela (“Quem me ouvir cantar”) and Candeia e Casquinha (“Outro recado”), as well as by Mangueira Samba School composer Nelson Cavaquinho (“O bem e o mal”), among others. In this book, Dealtry tells stories about Clara Nunes’s life, showing the transformation from a bolero singer in a performer of songs connected to Afro-Brazilian religions and to samba, as well as the strengthening of her image as a popular singer in the Brazilian cultural melting pot. Here we see the song choices of Guerreira, the importance of Clara’s spirituality, her relationship to other musical artists, as well as stories about the strength of her performance.
About the artist
Clara Nunes was one of the biggest interpreters in Brazil. Born in Paraopeba (Minas Gerais) in 1942, she conquered the country and was the first female Brazilian singer to sell over 100 thousand copies, at a time when it was believed that women’s records didn’t sell. Daughter of Iansã and Ogum, in Candomblé religion, her knowledge of Afro-Brazilian traditions and love of samba were clear in her songs. Guerreira, released in 1978, was one of her best-selling albums. Clara Nunes died in 1983, in Rio de Janeiro. In 2019, her chosen samba school, Portela, is paying a tribute to the singer in its Carnaval hymn: “In modern Madureira, I’ll always hear the songbird sing”.
